We have popularized phrases like ‘Carpe Diem’ (seize the moment), so much so that it has found a congenial position on the most common place objects. “To live in the moment” has inhabited our daily lives in more ways than we would like to acknowledge. We have commercialized our lives with daily humdrum to a degree that it hasn’t given us a chance to standstill; a pause to reflect on what we’re eating, watching or even wearing. Retrospection, at times, helps us in enhancing our today. We look at memorabilia; physical and virtual, to ignite lost childhood, broken love stories or just to rekindle a friendship. American poetess Emily Dickinson said, “Forever is composed of nows.” However, to make our now better, it’s important to look back from time to time and see the path you’ve paved for yourself in order to build a better present.
One of our new collaborations is an attempt to delve into the past- to know the has been. To experience the same joy Owen Wilson did in Midnight in Paris while making the rounds of the city of dreams in the ‘20s, living his life in both, past and present. We decided to time-travel with a brand that resonates with the idea of vintage, taking a long pause with them while they delve into classic silhouettes and lush materials. BirdWalk is a brand that captures the charm of ‘Old-worldly’ through their clothes. Their collection is an ode to serene gardens and the winter sun. We birdwalked our way with them, while interpreting their designs in the way Fashion and I would.
We raided our vintage closet and made our way right to one of the oldest fabrics that has managed to stay eternally young- the humble denim. Denims are reigning the ramp, right from runway to street style. The key was to layer the look to give it a modern stance and the denim jacket helped us do just that. Following this, we happened on a beautiful mustard dupatta, that we thought would complement the denim jacket. Both these pieces were layered over a hand embroidered BirdWalk dress with an asymmetric hemline constructed in way that the underskirt lays longer than the dress. The art of layering helps you create hybrid outfits that are truly unique to your personality. It gives you room for meandering into varied cultural influences and to strive for inspiration outside of (and far beyond) your immediate surroundings. We believe that’s what we hoped to achieve with this look. We finished the look to add to the fusion of Indian and western with a gota-patti potli bag and hoop earrings.
Knowing when to pause is important. Slow down and slip into the nuanced designs of BirdWalk as they traverse through feminine and understated designs while exploring hand painted and hand embroidered motifs. And while you’re at it, give it a twist! Layer, accessorize and add your own personality to it; furthermore, marvel at your own doing
