A Modern Twist: ABRAHAM & THAKORE

Abraham & Thakore are emblematic of their contemporary take on traditional fabrics. Drawing from the rich cultural heritage of India, they create one-of-a-kind pieces that are in-touch with today’s design sensibilities. This particular collection focuses on the timeless fabric that embodies the very spirit of India – khadi. Khadi has a strong connect to Indian history – touted as “the fabric of the people”, it was an iconic part of the swadeshi movement and heralded the start of India’s sovereignty. With it’s roots so deep in socio-cultural movements, Khadi has never been a fabric associated with ‘glamour’ – with their SS ‘17 collection Abraham & Thakore try to find a reasonable balance between the two. Contradiction and contrast go hand-in-hand as black and gold motifs are fused with the rough, homespun quality of the weave. These pieces go beyond traditional occasion wear – they’re definite conversation starters.

This logo calligraphy sari is a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down. The bold graphics don’t detract from its simplicity, but provide it with a super ethnic feel. This can be worn to a day function with a fitted crop t-shirt or a night do with something a little more embellished. As seen above, it’s paired with something a little retro to add a touch of poppy youthfulness. The lavender velvet accents the black-and-white well, adding a bit of spring to the outfit. High collars are always a fun addition to saris – modernizing it with some je ne sais quoi. Add silver/rhinestone accessories or go all out with some statement jade pieces, this is a sari to be shown off so make sure you do it right!
